Verifying that Alaska's Salmon Fishery is Sustainably and Responsibly Managed

MSC provides independent, third-party certification of the management of the major Alaska commercial fisheries. Certification provides additional assurance and verification to buyers, markets, and stakeholders that seafood from Alaska is responsibly managed and sustainable.

The Alaska salmon fishery originally received the certification of sustainability from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in 2000. On April 23rd, 2019, the Alaska salmon fishery successfully completed the full 5-year re-certification under MSC. The current certificate has been extended and is valid until November 2024 (see MSC website for full certificate).

MSC Alaska Salmon Certificate of Conformity

2020 MSC Salmon Client Group List

The Alaska salmon fishery originally received the certification of sustainability from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in 2000. On April 23rd, 2019, the Alaska salmon fishery successfully completed the full 5-year re-certification under MSC. The current certificate is valid through November 11th, 2023 (see MSC website for full certificate).

On October 1st, 2019, the Pacific Seafood Processors Association (PSPA) transferred the Clientship and MSC certificate for Alaska salmon to AFDF. AFDF has worked cooperatively with the past MSC Salmon Client, PSPA, to coordinate and share resources, ideas and work products, as they affect both MSC and RFM certifications, and result in efficiencies for industry. Both groups anticipate that housing both the MSC salmon and RFM salmon certificates and Client Groups under AFDF will lead to further efficiencies for industry.

In order to participate as members of the MSC Salmon Client Group and sell Alaska salmon as MSC certified, primary processors (companies that purchase Alaska salmon directly from fishermen) are required to pay a fair and equitable share of the cost of the fishery certification in proportion with the pounds of salmon purchased. AFDF is always looking for ways to reduce costs and, when there is a surplus in this program budget, the funds are rolled-forward to the next year. Billing for membership to the MSC Alaska Salmon Client Group will occur annually in April, prior to the commencement of the salmon season. Click here for the current Client Group.
